"Republicans and Immigration" Cartoon

In the political cartoon “Republicans and Immigration” illustrated by Jimmy Margulies of The Cagle Post (January 16, 2015), Margulies depicts how through the ongoing controversy of immigration, the GOP is not allowing any immigration reforms pass through Congress. Furthermore, Margulies portrays the GOP elephant speaking Spanish and addressing how immigrants are not welcomed to the U.S.

Margulies’ cartoon indicates the argument of how the republicans are the ones halting the passage of immigration reform that would grant amnesty to millions of undocumented immigrants. However, the cartoon particularly targets a certain group of immigrant audience, Latinos. The GOP, symbolized as an elephant, mocks a welcoming Latino saying of  “Mi casa es su casa” and rephrases it to “Mi casa no es su casa.” This creates a powerful effect on how it affronts the Latino community by insulting their own culture and connects to Margulies argument on how the GOP are the ones who fail to produce a comprehensive reform in congress.

  1. The beginning of your summary seems to be analysis rather than summary but it still does give an idea as to what the main idea is. Your analysis is good as it explains who the cartoon targets.

  2. You explained who the elephant is referring to (GOP) and why he talks Spanish to.a Latino. This provides the political cartoons effectiveness of the GOP being against immigration, but most importantly Latinos specifically. You could have added to the statement of how "mi casa es su casa" shows the irony between Americans and Hispanics. The irony of the unwelcoming of immigrants and the GOP halting the passage of immigration reform. Other than that, I really liked how you explained this political cartoon targets a specific group rather than being general about who it targets.
